NORTH DAKOTA STATE CAPITOL

Visitors to the North Dakota State Capitol grounds find a unique blend of the state's past, present, and future. The State Capitol building, also known as the "Skyscraper on the Prairie", stands proudly in the heart of Bismarck. Tours of the Capitol are available weekdays on the hour from 8:00-11:00 a.m. and 1:00-4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Saturday tours run from 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. and Sunday tours are from 1-4:00 p.m.

Free admission.

NORTH DAKOTA HERITAGE CENTER

    Located on the Capitol Grounds, the Heritage Center houses the state's "Official Archives". The Heritage Center serves as the state's museum and is accredited by the American Association of Museums. The Center houses one of the largest collections of Plains Indian artifacts in the nation. Demonstrations are available by appointment. Open Monday - Friday from 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., and Sundays from 11:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Call (701) 328-2666 for further information. Admission is free.

 

HISTORIC GOVERNOR'S MANSION
    From 1893 to 1960, the home at the corner of Avenue B and 4th Street in Bismarck served as the North Dakota Governor's Residence. The mansion is open as a museum 1:00-5:00 p.m., Wednesday through Sunday, May to September. For additional information or to make group arrangements, contact the State Historical Society, (701) 328-2666. Admission is free.

 

LEWIS & CLARK RIVERBOAT
    Cruise the fabulous Missouri River aboard the Lewis and Clark, 150 passenger riverboat. This all-weather cruise boat docks at the Port of Bismarck, North River Road, Exit 157 off I-94. Excursion cruises, dinner cruises, moonlight cruises, pizza cruises, and family cruises are all available for your enjoyment Memorial Day to Labor Day. Charters and special group cruise rates are available May through October. Fees for adults are $10.95 and $7.95 for children 4-12. DAKOTA ZOO

    North Dakota's largest zoo is home to over 500 reptiles, birds and mammals. Located on the east bank of the Missouri river in Sertoma Park, you can enjoy sights and sounds of the zoo May through September from 10:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m. (Special events each Wednesday night from 7:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.) Admission is $4.00 for adults and $1.50 for children 12 & under. HISTORIC CAMP HANCOCK
    The site of a military camp dating back to 1872 was used to protect Northern Pacific railroad workers. Camp Hancock is tucked away at 101 E. Main and First Street in Bismarck. Now on the National Register of Historic Places, the camp includes the Bread of Life Episcopal Church and a Northern Pacific steam locomotive. A log building, which served as the camp's headquarters, now serves as an interpretive museum. Camp Hancock is open May through Labor Day, Wednesday - Sunday, 1:00 - 5:00 p.m. Admission is free.

 

FIVE NATIONS ART DEPOT
    The historic Burlington Northern Railroad Depot on Main Street in Mandan is home to Native American arts and crafts. Works of more than 200 North Dakota American Indian artists are available for purchase. The Depot is also available for art and American Indian interpretive programs. Open daily 10 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., Summer hours are 10:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m.

RAILROAD MUSEUM
    The Railroad Museum, located north of Mandan on Old Red Trail, houses exhibits from the early 1900s. Handmade models, photographs, and uniforms are on display. A miniature train carries passengers on Sundays. The museum is open from 1:00-5:00 p.m. Memorial Day through Labor Day. Free admission.

 

FT. LINCOLN TROLLEY
    A restored trolley car that once ran in Bismarck, now offers a unique trip to Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park. Departing from Mandan's 3rd St. Station daily on the hour Monday through Sunday 1-5:00 p.m. and returning from Fort Lincoln on the half hour Monday through Sunday 1:30-5:30 p.m. The season opens Memorial Day and runs through Labor Day. FORT ABRAHAM LINCOLN
    Relive 1875 at historic Fort Abraham Lincoln where history comes to life. Tour the Fort McKeen Infantry post, visit the home of George and Libby Custer at Cavalry Square, explore On-a-Slant Indian Village along with the Museum and Visitors Center. In addition, from mid-June to mid-August, on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday nights, enjoy a night at the theater where you will laugh, cry, and sing along with the Fort Lincoln Players. The Park is open May through October. Summer hours are 9:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m. and 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. in the fall. Admission for Custer House and all sites is $5.00 for adults, and $3 for students; admission for Museum, Village and Barracks is $2 for adults and $1 for students. Tours of the Custer House, Commissary Storehouse, Granary and Barracks are available from 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Off season tours are available by calling (701) 663-4758.

 

Custer Trail Rides

    Ride back in history at beautiful Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park. Explore the bluffs over-looking the majestic Missouri River and enjoy the breathtaking scenery at Custer Trail Rides.Trail rides are available from sunrise to sunset seven days a week. Rates are $10.00 per hour or daily rates are available. For groups of 10 or more, please call for advance reservations.

    Children must be 7 years of age. Rider weight restriction of 250 lbs. Register at the Commissary/Storehouse for all rides. Open 9 a.m. - 7:00 p.m. daily.
